Every home here is a house, which decides where the equipment lives

Golden Beach is small enough to read line by line. There are 345 homes in the town and the survey counts every one of them as a detached house — no attached homes, no duplexes, nothing in a shared building anywhere in the tally. That reads like a footnote and is actually the whole brief. Nobody else provides an equipment room, no riser passes your ceiling on its way somewhere else, and there is no shared plant space that somebody maintains for you. Everything the system needs in order to run has to live inside the house, in a position you chose.

That position deserves more thought than it usually gets. A rack is not a shelf for boxes. It draws power, it makes heat, it makes a small amount of noise, and sooner or later somebody has to get behind it. A cupboard under the stairs will take the equipment and then slowly cook it. A garage handles the heat and costs you cable length to the far rooms. The right answer differs house by house, but the question does not, and it is far cheaper to settle before any cabling is pulled than after everything is terminated.

Seventy years of building, all on the same few streets

The houses are not one generation. The largest single group dates from the 1950s — 76 of the 345 — and more than a third of the town has gone up since 2000. Two houses a few doors apart can be seventy years apart in construction, so nothing about ceiling voids, wall build-ups or existing low-voltage cabling can be inferred from the town as a whole. It is settled at the address, by looking. What survives that variation is the order of the work rather than any assumption about the house.

In the older houses there is generally no structured cabling to build on, because nothing of the kind was expected when they were finished. In-ceiling speaker positions, a screen wall and network coverage that reaches the far end of the property then become questions about access — what the roof space, the wall cavities and the slab will physically allow. Answer those first and the layout follows them without argument. Choose the layout first and the answers arrive later as extra work in a finished room.

Owners occupy 186 of the 191 lived-in homes here, so the person making the decision is usually the person who will still be living with the result. That argues for treating the equipment position as permanent infrastructure rather than as furniture. A rack that can be reached, ventilated and added to will absorb a new zone or a replacement processor without anyone touching the house. One squeezed into the first convenient gap turns every later change into a small building project, which is a strange price to pay for a cupboard.
